1. GENERALSAFETYRULESANDMACHINERYDESCRIPTION
1.1 GeneralSafetyuse:
Thecontentofthismanualistobeconsideredasanintegrationtothegeneralsafetyrulesappliedinyourcountry,intheenvironment
youareworkinginandalsototherulestobefollowedbylaw.Incaseofconflictwithanyofthepreviouslymentionedrul
esinplace,
pleasecontactourtechnicalofficeforalternativeproceduresthatwillnotcreateconflict.
Always remember that any operation with mechanical machinery could be dangerous and make sure all possible precautions are
followedbeforeandduringassembly&maintenance.SAFETYFIRST!
1.2 Generaldescription
Closedcircuitcool
ingtowersoftheRAAseriesarecounter‐flowinduceddraughtcoolerswiththefluidtobecooled(primarycircuit)
circulatinginaclosedsealedloop.
Thefluidtobecooledpassthroughacoil,externallysprayedcontinuouslywithwater,pumpedinanopencircuit(secondarycircuit)
fromthecollectionwaterbasin.Theevaporationofpa
rtofthiswaterremovesmostoftheheatfromthefluidintheprimarycircuit.
Evaporationisachieved thanks to a high quantity of air moved, by the use of axial fan(s) installed ontop of the unit,counter‐flow
againstthewaterofthesecondarycir
cuit.
Theclosedcircuitcoolingtoweriscomposedbythefollowingelements:
Primarycircuit:
• Coil
Secondarycircuit:
• Waterpumpingsystem
• Waterdistributionsystem
Other:
• Airsystem
• Casing,watercollectionbasin,airintakeandlouverpanels.
• Drifteliminator
1.3 Primarycircuit(coil)
Coil is made by high quality carbon steel bended and welded. A further process of hot dip galvanization assures the necessary
protectionagainstexternalcorrosion.Coilcanbesuppliedonrequestinst
ainlesssteelboth304and316grade.
Duringassemblythecoilistestedinaccordancetoactualrules(PED).Afurthertest isdonebeforefittingthecoilintothemachine.
Differenttestproceduresorwitnessedtestsarepossiblewithextracosts.
1.4 Secondarycircuit
1.4.1 Wat
erpumpingsystem
Theexchangecoilissprayedwithwatercollectedfromthebasinoftheunitandpumpedbytheuseacent rifugalpumpinside
a water distribution system. The motor of the pump is directly coupled on the bronze impeller and installed in a vertical
positionfacilitatinginspection andmaintenance.Thewateristhencol
lectedinthebasinoftheunitandreadytobepumped
again,afterpassingthroughastainlesssteelfilter/strainerinstalledinthebottomofthebasin.
1.4.2 Waterdistributionsystem
Waterispumpedinthetopoftheclosedcircuitcooleranddistributedth
roughagalvanisedsteelcollectorandpolypropylene
(PP)pipenetwork.ItcouldalsobesuppliedinStainlessSteelwithextracost.
Spraynozzles(madebystaticfibreglassreinforcedpolypropylene)arescrewedintothePPpipesandallowwatertodroponto
thecoil.Nozzleshaveawidewaterpassage,withminimumpossibilit
iesofclogging,breakingdownorblocking.Thedesignof
thenozzlesisstudiedtoallowtheperfectwaterdistribution(fullcone)overthecoil.
Incaseofcloggingorbreakingorjustforsimplemaintenance,theycanbedissembledfromthePPpipesan deasycleanedor
replaced.
Make‐up water
, to replace depletion through evaporation or elimination to avoid scaling, is carried out automatically by
meansofanintakevalveinstalledinthebasin.
1.5 Airsystem
Airissuppliedincounter‐flowtothewaterandisprovidedbyaxial fan(s)staticallyanddynamicallybalanced,installedatthetopof
thec
oolingtower(induceddraught).
The fan can be manufactured in different materials (PP, Aluminium, etc.) being place d inside the diffusers, which can also be
manufacturedind i fferentmaterialslikepaintedgalvanisedsteel(standard)orstainlesssteel.Anarrowindicatesthefandirectionto
beused.Inorde
rtoprotectthefanfromanyexternalobjectandtopreventinjuriesastainlesssteelsafe‐guardgridisinstalledinthe
upperpartofthediffuser.
Theelectricmotor(s),totallysealedandself‐ventilated,areprovidedstandardwithclassFinsulation,capableofwithstandinga
temperatureof155°C.Electricmot
orsareinaccordancetotheEU690/2009norm(ifapplicable).Runningspeedcanvaryin
accordancetoeachsinglemachineprojectspecification.Specialmotorscanbefittedondemand.Motor(s)aremountedona
galvanizedsteelsupportorplate,andinstalledinsidethecoolingtower,justbelowthefan.
In order to elim
inate frictions,wearing or unnecessary maintenance (typical of anindirect coupling)the coupling between electric
motor(s)andfan(s)isdirect.
Betweenthecoil(s)andfan(s),alayerofdrifteliminatormadebyPVCisprovided.
